Paul Baumer-A nineteen year old who is just coming out of high school to join the German Army in World War 1. He is the narrator of the story and is the one who usually seems to be an honorable soldier.
Stanlius Katcinsky-A forty year old soldier who is constantly mentioned as being wise. He finds the soldiers all their extra food and mostly earns respect for all he does.
Albert Krop-A very clear thinker, this soldier is always making an insightful joke. One of his comments was about the war and how it should be a bullfight between the Prime Ministers in their underwear. The Minister that survived would be the winner.
Corporal Himmelstoss-This drill instructor is known for because of his demanding demeanor. He is always embarrassing Paul and his friends, but he ironically enough teaches the soldiers about Camaraderie.
Franz Kemmerich-Another one of Paul's comerades. He owns prized war boots that are envied by all the soldiers. Kemmerich dies in chapter 2, but all the other soldiers care about is who earns his prized possessions.
Kantorek- Kantorek was Paul's schoolmaster back in high school. He persuaded Paul and his comerades to join the army. He described them as the "iron youth".
Detering-Another one of Paul's comerades. He is a farmer who is staunch about nature. In chapter 4, he seems to only care about horses when his own life is at stake during a bombardment.
Muller-Muller is a schoolboy who dreams of being back home in the school books he had once loved. He is the inheriter of Kemmerich's prized war boots in chapter 2.
Tjaden-A big eater and also one of Paul's comerades. Tjaden often fells pleasure in his glorious revenge on Himmelstoss. He constantly talks about Himmelstoss as if he is a cruel beast.
